What is Scout's Relationship with Miss Maudie and how has she shown growth through it?
By Bennett Ross
Throughout the summer Scout has learned to trust Miss Maudie because she is pushed away by Jem and Dill. Scout describes their pre-existing relationship with Miss Maudie as“...not clearly defined. Until Jem and Dill excluded me from their plans, she was only another lady in the neighborhood..." (Lee, 47). Since Dill had grown closer to Jem, he didn’t let Scout in on all their plans like he used to. Jem now had someone who he thought he could trust more than Scout so he mostly excluded her. “In summertime, twilights are long and peaceful. Miss Maudie and I would sit on her porch watching the sky go from yellow to pink…" (Lee, 48). This quote shows how Scout has grown to trust and become friends with Miss Maudie. She shares this experience with Miss Maudie instead of playing with Jem and Dill. Scout has grown to realize that she doesn’t have to spend every minute of her day with Jem and has found something peaceful and fun to do instead. She demonstrates understanding of her situation with Jem and finds someone else to spend time with. Scout also talks about how different Miss Maudie was from Miss Stefanie.  “While no one with a grain of sense trusted Miss Stefanie, Jem and I had considerable faith in Miss Maudie...She was our friend.”(Lee, 50). Scout has found someone other than Jem who she feels like she can understand and confide in. In closing, Scout has shown personal growth through understanding her situation and finding a new friend.

Will Scout stay friends with Miss Maudie when the school year starts? What will become of Scout's
relationship with Jem? What will Jem do to provoke Boo Radley Next? Will Scout disobey Atticus again under Jem’s command?

  1. Because of Scout and Miss Maudie's strong relationship that started during the Summer, and is continuing, when the new school year starts, I think Scout and Miss Maudie will still be friends. There's a possibility that they may not participate in the same exact things as they do now, but since they have a lot to talk about, I'm confident that they will spend some time together. Until now, Jem and Scout had had a strong relationship, and the two were very close, virtually inseparable. Because of Dill's arrival, I feel that Dill and Jem have grown closer, and the thought of Scout being a girl made Jem push her away. For all of Jem's life, Scout was his best friend, and he didn't participate in the sexism of the time because he never had a solid connection with another guy, but since Dill and Jem have bonded, Jem was sucked into the vortex of what is sexism. But because of all of these events, Miss Maudie and Scout have bonded, which led or is currently leading Miss Maudie on being Scout's role model and mentor. I think Miss Maudie will become an important character in TKAM, and she will have a large impact on Scout's growth.
