Free Response - Why did Scout question Mr. Raymond if he only drank cola?

Scout's perspective on Mr. Raymond shows how the town has spread rumors about him. When Scout, Jem, and Dill first meet Mr. Raymond, they were surprised that Mr. Raymond was trying to"corrupt" Dill by giving him Whiskey that they later find out is actually coca-cola. Mr. Raymond tells Scout that "I try to give 'em a reason, you see. It helps folks if they can latch onto a reason"(228). Because Mr. Raymond doesn't follow the racist Maycomb way, people often try to find reasons like assuming that he is drunk all the time. Most people in Maycomb don't think of the way Dolphus Raymond live or liking African Americans as reasonable behaviors which is why they resort to finding reasons.

These encounters with Racism Harper Lee has created will help Scout better understand the real world and how people act. Having Scout see her father lose a case as "simple as black and white"(231). and that Dolphus Raymond does not really drink alcohol is going to enhance Scout’s growth and prepare her for what she will encounter later in life.

Will Atticus agree with why people think Dolphus Raymond drinks Whiskey?
What will Aunt Alexandra think of the results of the case?
How will the results of the case impact Dill?

  1. What will Aunt Alexandra think of the results of the case?

The court took hours to decide but finally came to the conclsuion to convict Tom Robinson of raping and beating of Mayella Eweel. When Aunt Alexandra finds out the news about the decision of the case I think her reaction will be that she will be ok with it and that she will think that Tom Robinson deserves to be punished even though the evidence is stacked againt Mayella and her father. I think the trial decision and Aunt Alexandra’s reaction will both both acts and thoughts of racism. Even though it seemed T Rob couldn’t lose because of the evidence, racism set it and the decision was made. Same thing with the Aunt Alexandra racist and prejudiced towards black people. These people have a fixed mindset that one race is superior to another. The “Maycomb Way”.

  3. I don't believe that Atticus will agree with the way people assume Dolphus Raymond is. The Maycomb Way is based off of racism and assumption. Everyone believes something that isn't true because they've believe rumors. Because of the Maycomb Way, everyone assumes that Mr. Raymond is a drunk when really it's not reasonable to make that judgement. No one really know him and know one understands and have just decided that he's drinking whiskey and not cola.
